Jayme Alves‑Filho is a dynamic and dedicated professional in the fields of health and physical education. Currently serving as our Athletic Director, PE and Health Professor, and Head Coach for Tennis and Softball. Born in Brazil and raised in Newark, he brings a rich multicultural perspective to his work and academic leadership. Jayme earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health from Kean University, where he developed a strong foundation in health education, physical wellness, and pedagogical practice. He further advanced his leadership skills by completing a Master’s in Educational Administration from the American College of Education. With a passion for promoting healthier, active lifestyles, Jayme has achieved significant milestones in his career. As an Athletic Director, he has successfully overseen athletic programming, coordinated interscholastic sports initiatives, and fostered environments where student-athletes excel both on the field and in the classroom. In his role as a Professor of Health and Physical Education, Jayme is known for his innovative teaching methods that integrate theory with hands-on learning, encouraging students to develop both physical competence and well-being.
David Dowling
Assistant Professor of Health and Physical Education

Mr. Dowling is a founding faculty member at BHSEC Newark. Since 2011, Mr. Dowling has taught and coached here at BHSEC. He has received his Bachelor’s Degree at Ithaca College in upstate New York, and his Master’s Degree from Adelphi University. Prior to teaching at BHSEC Newark he taught all levels of Physical Education and Health on Long Island. In addition to teaching, Mr. Dowling coaches the girls’ volleyball team and coordinates the athletic program. He is an avid sports fan and enjoys participating in outdoor activities. He resides with his wife and three children in Sussex County NJ.
John Martin

Mr. Martin started teaching at Bard High School Early College in 2016. He achieved his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health from Montclair State University. Mr. Martin teaches ninth grade Health and Physical Education as well as College Personal Health and College Personal Fitness. Additionally he coaches high school football, wrestling, and baseball.
Sarene Thomas

Ms. Thomas currently serves as the Athletic Trainer at Bard High School Early College. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Master of Science in Athletic Training degrees from Seton Hall University. Her love for medicine and movement led her to pursue a career in Athletic Training. With 8 years of experience in the field, Ms. Thomas hopes to bring her knowledge and experience of sports medicine to help the students of BEC and keep athletes as healthy as possible. During her free time, Ms. Thomas loves to travel, read and spend time with her family.

In this four-semester sequence, students will gain the knowledge of concepts and skills that will allow them to develop a physically, socially, and emotionally healthy lifestyle. In Health 9, concepts student analyze include: the impact of nutrients on their bodies, the process of developing and achieving goals, the mechanics behind the skeletal and muscular systems, as well as other topics in health. Students will have the opportunity to use interactive learning to understand these concepts. In Health 10, students present injury and First Aid prevention projects, research the history of their community as it relates to community awareness, and take a deeper look at anatomy and physiology through selected body systems.

This four-semester sequence is designed to assist students in acquiring the knowledge, skills, confidence, and appreciation necessary for leading physically active and healthy lifestyles. Students will learn the advantages of dynamic warm-ups and how it prepares them for activity, they will continue to develop sport-related skills, and they will record and analyze their personal level of fitness as it relates to the health-related fitness components. Written work connects the physical components to conceptual understandings of fitness.

BARD115 College Personal Health
College Personal Health will discuss consumer health advocacy, dealing with finding and purchasing products that are useful and beneficial to your health. We will discuss the life cycle, with subjects covering growth and development. Finally, we will learn and discuss different types of communicable and non-communicable diseases. If time is allotted, we may cover some driver’s education materials.
BARD118 College Personal Fitness
College Personal Fitness will help students develop understanding of planning and constructing a personalized fitness plan. Students will participate in cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility workouts of the day.
